Michael Lipsett, MD

Dr. Michael Lipsett formerly served as Chief of the Environmental Health Investigations Branch (EHIB).  Prior to becoming the Branch Chief, he served as the Chief of EHIB's Exposure Assessment Section.  For approximately 15 years, Dr. Lipsett was responsible for developing the public health and medical foundations for California’s ambient air quality standards. He received a Gold Superior Achievement Award (in recognition of exceptional contribution and service to state government) for his work on the particulate matter standards, promulgated in 2002. In addition, he has designed and conducted air pollution epidemiological studies, including time-series studies of mortality and morbidity, as well as panel studies involving asthmatics and individuals with cardiac disease. He has served on a variety of local, state, and national committees focusing on the impact of air pollution on human health. He was the Principal Investigator of a study of long-term impacts of air pollution on cardiovascular disease among over 100,000 participants in the California Teachers Study cohort. Dr. Lipsett continues to serve as the clinical director of CDPH's Environmental Health Laboratory Branch for purposes of laboratory certification under the federal Clinical Laboratories Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
