Short fact sheet in English or Spanish (Available Soon)
  • A brief introduction to electric and magnetic fields and their possible health effects, written for the general public.

Long fact sheet in English or Spanish (Available Soon)

  • A more detailed discussion of electric and magnetic fields and research into their possible health effects. This fact sheet contains some technical detail and is aimed at the scientifically curious.

Non-utility Magnetic Field Measurement Providers List
  • List of companies that measure magnetic fields in homes, offices, schools, and commercial and industrial buildings, and also fields from appliances and electrical equipment. These providers have not received certification, accreditation, licensing, or endorsement from the Public Health Institute or the California Department of Health Services. You may also request free measurements from your utility company.

Home Residence Fact Sheets

EMF in Homes Fact Sheet

  • This document explains average home magnetic field measurements and the issues surrounding them.

School Related Documents

EMF in Schools Fact Sheet
  • This document simplifies the data from the School Exposure Assessment. Schools interested in comparing their magnetic field measurements to those of other California schools can use this document to help them do so.
School Design Guidelines Checklist
  • A discussion of practical, "no- and low-cost" techniques for minimizing exposure to magnetic fields in new and remodeled school buildings. Aimed at school facility planners, decision-makers, and architects.
Fixing Electric Wiring in Schools: A Video
  • This document describes how improperly connected electrical wiring could pose hazards in schools. This document also discusses the Wiring Video that was created to teach electricians how to fix these wiring errors.
School Exposure Assessment, Executive Summary

School Exposure Assessment, Non-Technical Summary (English) (Spanish) (Chinese)

  • This School Exposure Assessment is a very technical document based on a survey in which measurements were taken both in indoor and outdoor areas of 89 schools located throughout California. This survey aimed to (1) identify and describe power frequency (60 Hz) magnetic fields (MF) found in schools, (2) assess costs of reducing exposure to EMF in California Public Schools, and (3) use the collected data to influence policy regarding EMF levels and sources in schools.

The School Exposure Assessment's Executive Summary, like the rest of the document, is rather technical. The Non-Technical Summary, on the other hand, reveals the major conclusions of the survey with only a minimal amount of technical detail.

School Policy Analysis, Non-Technical Summary (Coming Soon)

  • A contractor for the program, with extensive input from the Stakeholders Advisory Consultants, is developing a computer model and related report to help analyze the options for dealing with EMF in California's public schools. The School Policy Analysis project is aimed at state level school decision-makers, and will provide an overview of the issues facing local officials.

The non-technical summary for this project clearly and briefly explains the major conclusions from the computer model and related report.
