Michael Lipsett, MD
Dr. Michael Lipsett currently serves as Chief of the Environmental Health Investigations Branch (EHIB) and is the Acting Chief of EHIB's Exposure Assessment Section. Projects in the Exposure Assessment Section encompass epidemiological examinations of the cardiopulmonary effects of air pollution, a large cross-sectional study of adolescent respiratory health at the California-Mexico border, public outreach and education concerning environmental contaminants (especially mercury) in fish, studies of fish consumption patterns in California, microbial contamination of the indoor environment and its effects on human health, public health preparedness for chemical releases, exposures to traffic emissions, and others.
For approximately 15 years, Dr. Lipsett was responsible for developing the public health and medical foundations for California’s ambient air quality standards. He received a Gold Superior Achievement Award (in recognition of exceptional contribution and service to state government) for his work on the particulate matter standards, promulgated in 2002. In addition, he has designed and conducted air pollution epidemiological studies, including time-series studies of mortality and morbidity, as well as panel studies involving asthmatics and individuals with cardiac disease. He has served on a variety of local, state, and national committees focusing on the impact of air pollution on human health. He is the Principal Investigator of a study of long-term impacts of air pollution on cardiovascular disease among the participants in the California Teachers Study cohort.
He is the Principal Investigator of a study of long-term impacts of air pollution on cardiovascular disease and mortality among over 100,000 participants in the California Teachers Study cohort.
Dr. Lipsett is the program lead within the Department of Public Health for the California Environmental Contaminant Biomonitoring Program. He also serves as the clinical director of CDPH's Environmental Health Laboratory Branch for purposes of the federal Clinical Laboratories Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
