Perinatal Hormones and Autism
To explore a hormonal etiology for Autism, we linked several existing CDPH databases. Prenatal and newborn screening results for several hormones and protein markers (biomarkers) provided by the CDPH Genetic Disease Screening Program were linked to our statewide, Department of Developmental Services (DDS)-based, Autism surveillance data. Levels of the biomarkers were compared in cases and in the remaining screened CA births identified from birth certificates for 1996 and 2002, with slight differences noted. The results suggest that further study on hormones and Autism would be warranted, but do not suggest these prenatal markers can be used to screen for Autism (not a goal of the study). Funding was provided by National Alliance for Autism Research/Autism Speaks.
