Border Asthma and Allergies Study (BASTA), Imperial County
In May 2005, the California Department of Public Health conducted a school-based respiratory health survey in Imperial County, California. The survey was called the Border Asthma and Allergies study (BASTA). The purpose of the survey was to determine the amount of asthma and asthma symptoms in young teenagers, and to examine family and environmental factors that might be related to asthma.
Over 3,000 7th- and 8th-grade students from 10 schools completed the survey. Approximately 20% reported having been diagnosed with asthma at some point in their lives, while about 13% of those who had had such a diagnosis reported symptoms consistent with current asthma. A considerable number of BASTA participants who had never been diagnosed with asthma nevertheless reported asthma-like symptoms. To read more:
