Palos Verdes Shelf Fish Contamination Project

EHIB maintains a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region IX (EPA) for implementing components of the Institutional Controls (IC) program for the Palos Verdes Shelf Superfund Site located off the coasts of Los Angeles and Orange Counties.  The IC program addresses monitoring, enforcement and public education regarding fish contamination.  In particular, EHIB will provide consultation, technical assistance, and training resources to USEPA’s contractors, including the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission and Impact Assessment, Inc. for the Fish Contamination Education Collaborative.  

The Fish Contamination Education Collaborative (FCEC) is an outreach and education project  with the following goals:

1. To prevent exposures of populations eating fish caught from the Los Angeles and Orange County Coasts
2. To conduct education with the most affected populations so they can make informed decisions about reducing health risks associated with consuming contaminated fish
3. To strengthen the ability of local government and community based organizations to better address fish contamination issues now and in the future.
